What is yoga?

Yoga has such a rich history, philosophy and methodology that the answers to this question are many and varied. The word "Yoga" originated from the Sanskrit word "Yuj" and has the same meaning as the English word "Yoke", to bind or to unite.

Yoga is predominantly a spiritual practice, with components of mind, body and breath awareness and methods aiming at assisting us to reach a higher sense of self. There are stepping stones in each of the various aspects of yoga (the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual). When combined, these steps lead us to Samadhi (self-realisation and enlightenment).

At Bodylight, we respect and acknowledge the versatility and beauty in each of our students' and clients' spiritual paths. The focus, therefore, is on strengthening the mind-body connection of the individual.
One tool extensively used at the Bodylight yoga classes to help achieve that is the breath. In yoga terminology this is known as Prana Yama (expansion of the vital life force energy). When we practise with breath awareness, the mind and the body link. When we move mindfully, the practice of Asana (the physical postures and poses) is safely performed with greater ease. Bodylight method is the weave of yoga, pilates and qi-gong.

At our yoga classes, the fundamental Bodylight principles are at the heart of the practice:

Through understanding and practicing these principles, we can achieve some common goals such as flexibility, agility, strength, emotional balance, calmer mind, calmer nervous system and generally improve our wellbeing. Utilising control of mind over body, we can prevent injuries and ailments as well as promote self-healing and repair. With greater health, circulation and wellbeing of mind in body, we experience an expansion in our capacity to grow our consciousness and to feel joy, love, compassion and kindness towards yourself and each other.

A typical Bodylight class will have a Pranayama component, a physical Asana practice, a Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation) and meditation. Our instructors offer inspiration from the amazingly rich tapestry which is Yoga. Students and participants are encouraged to practice daily, to develop their inner teacher, their mind's eye and to find their own unique path within.
